Promote local industries: Nishank

Dehradun, Nov 4 (PTI) Uttarakhand Chief Minister Ramesh
Pokhariyal Nishank today asked scientists to identify local
resources-based industries so as to develop entrepreneurship
among the youth and check migration from the hills.
The scientists can find out the rural industries which
can be set up in the tough hilly areas where people can earn
their livelihood by using locally available resources, Nishank
said inaugurating a workshop on "Industrial development in the
hills and environment protection" here.
This would not only help develop entrepreneurship among
the youth but also check the migration problems from the
hills, he added.
Stating that the small industrial units can play an
important role in changing the economic and social scenario in
the hills, Nishank said a comprehensive action plan was needed
for the purpose.
There is a great potential of growth of herbs in the
state but villagers are unable to sell them because of
unavailability of marketing network in the hills, he said.
Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India,
R Chidambaram said there was a great need to develop
industries in the rural areas of the hills.
In this regard, he said the scientists were developing
new technologies aiming at making the rural industries more
cost effective and modern that would help improve the economic
status of villagers. PTI
